How To Have Confidence In Yourself

You see, we don’t appreciate something until we lose it. You may have confidence in yourself and be completely unaware of the power you have.

Confidence and faith are two different words, but, with exactly the same meaning. If you don’t have faith in yourself and your abilities, how can you be a confident person then?

Enough with the philosophy, let’s get practical.

Basketball Confidence Lost…

I was fairly confident in my basketball skills. I knew that I am not the greatest basketball player ever, but I liked to think that I am. I use to dribble like Allen Iverson, jump like Michael Jordan, dominate on the court like Kobe Bryant.

Enough with the ego talk. Ego is just an image of one’s confidence. A real confidence is hiding somewhere else…

To get back to the story. You see, a series of misfortunate events made me completely lose my basketball powers.

Basketball was the area of my life where I was the best! I practiced for hours and hours by my self, winter, summer, doesn’t matter. So, when I faced somebody on the basketball court I had a great deal of faith in my abilities.

One day, I accepted a call from a friend to join them for a soccer match. It was ten of us just fooling around. I was not warmed up, and to tell you the truth, I was a bit overweight. After an hour and a half we were still playing, just about to finish the game, when another group of guys walked in and asked who want’s to stay and play more. Enthusiastic about any kind of activity I naturally said yes.

Big mistake!

My body was not prepared for another hour of soccer. But, my mind was. I tried to cut the pass when my leg just snapped. Immediately I fell down and screamed in pain. Guys tried to help, but how can you stop the pain like that?

In doctors office after MRI scans, I found out my front cross ligament, lateral ligament and meniscus in my left knee were ruptured. The first thought in my mind was, basketball… That was it, that was the moment I lost my confidence. My faith that I will be able to play basketball again just evaporated in a second.

If I Only Know How To Build It Back

The operation went well, recovery as well. After that, I went to the gym to work some more. After some time building my muscles my leg was fine, however, something else was broken.

I was not aware of it until I learned what was causing me so much disappointment in life after that injury. After joining a program Six Minutes To Success I dunked the ball!

You see, my body was fine, but, my heart never healed.

I tied so many time to get back on the court and just shoot some ball for fun. But, there was no fun in it anymore. How, why? Those two questions were there every time I tried again. I knew something is wrong with my head, I knew I lost my confidence, my faith in my basketball skills.

So I tied fixing my thoughts. But, it wasn’t working. I still had some kind of barrier that I could determine.

You see, head or the mind is the place where we can just plant the seed of faith and confidence. What I didn’t know was equally important. We can plant a seed (idea) in our mind, however, if our subconscious mind (heart) doesn’t follow the positive thought with the positive feeling, it is never going to happen.

Six Minutes to Success opened my mind! No… I have to say it better… It opened my heart!

Confidence Formula

There is this wisdom and it goes something like this.

You can’t win in life if you are losing in your mind. Change your thoughts and you will change your life.

I thought I know what it means.

After some time going through a lot of positive material, setting new goals for myself, learning how to be disciplined and persistent, how to make a good decision and stick to it…finally I got the meaning of that old wisdom. However, I think it goes better like this.

You can’t win in life if you are losing in your mind and heart. Change your thoughts to change your heart and you will change your life.

Six Minutes To Success is the best self or personal development program in the world!

I was thinking in reverse. I had the image of my injury in my head every time I went out on the court. My heart was following that image and fed me with the emotion of fear, instead of with emotion of faith.

To Change Your Heart

So You Can Change Your Life!

Dunk it!

I will never forget that day. It was sunny afternoon in Dublin. Which is, by the way, a rare occasion. I didn’t have anything better to do, so I took my basketball, tied up my Nike’s and went outside. Close to my house, there is a small basketball court where some local kids use to hang around playing soccer.

I gave them a half of the court and took another half for my self. I had great fun seeing myself again playing like AI, MJ, and Kobe. The heart was racing with happiness.

Local kids saw how much fun I have so they decided to join me. Irish kids playing basketball! Haha! That is how much fun I had!

However, one of the kids was the loudest, and he was asking questions all the time. For a couple of times, he asked me “Can you dunk the ball?”, I said “No I can’t.”, he replied, “But you can jump and you are tall!?”, and poking me with, “Dunk it!”

That last sentence he said was a spark. I made a dribble around the kid for fun, made three steps forward, jumped as high as I can…and I dunked the ball!

The kids were amazed by what they saw. I cannot describe what was I feeling… My heart was one with my mind again…

I tied to hide my pride and happiness. So I told them stuff like when you grow up tall as I am (187cm!) you will be able to dribble and dunk as I did. And after a couple of minutes, I left the court and went home with the voice of that kid in my head…

Dunk it! Dunk it! Dunk it!…

How to have confidence in yourself? It takes time, a bit of practice every day. Six minutes a day may be enough.

  2. Wow excellent work! What I really liked most about this is that you kept it on the scientific side so as not to alienate those who are not religious like myself. I believe even an atheist could be open to this message. This is the power of positive thinking and when done in this way, I believe that you are right, you can indeed move mountains. Great work!

    • It is my goal to bring it on the scientific side since the religion has no meaning in the world today. I believe that both of those are dealing with the same knowledge. Just explained with different words.

      Thank you for the comment.

  3. The article is great and it offers some nice review in the works of Napoleon Hill. When reading this article, I noticed that this information here is more of recycling the information of the books you have read. Although your understand what you are talking about, it must be more simplified for the reader despite his or her understanding of the spiritual language. Your introduction is very powerful and well thought. The self confidence formula does not come out clear for me as a reader. The style is quite admirable and good luck.

    • Thank you for advice. I will remember it since it is my goal to pass the lesson in more simple language.

You can give the opportunity to Hill’s book. If I have read this before I read the book, probably I wouldn’t understand it as well. Think and Grow Rich has some great knowledge of it. That is the beauty of knowledge. You listen, you learn, and you eventually teach.

      Thank you.

  6. Great to be reminded of the enormously important ingredient of success.
You can only become what you can imagine. I think faith is the driver of persistence and lack of persistence is one of the main reasons, why people fail.

    • I wouldn’t write it better my self!

Here I have a useful post on the topic of persistence. Give it a read, or share with a friend who lacks in persistence.

      Thank you for your comment.

  8. Great and inspiring content.. Sometimes we don’t believe in our capabilities, or we push our selves down! But it is important that we are always able to trust or pick ourselves up. I have tried visualization and auto-suggestion, and I know it works!

  9. This is a great article and something I’ve never thought about before. However, I think we can both agree that removing hate, envy, jealousy and selfishness from our lives is a must in order for us to reach something only we can imagine. I’m a newbie to all of this but your detailed step-by-step guide has made me want to give it a go, so that is what I’ll be starting right away. Thank you very much friend.

    • The imagination can work ONLY when we remove all the negative from our mind and heart.

  10. Great article really enjoyed the read! I completely agree with you – to achieve anything in life, we have to believe in ourselves first – not just think that we believe but truly believe in our hearts. Love your website, I bookmarked it for the future reading, there’s tons of great information on it. Cheers!

  11. Hi Ivan,
Great story illustrating just how much power our mind and hearts control. Knowing that you can and being able to comes from deep within. Confidence and faith are the same, or at least so tightly woven together that they cannot be separated.
And, good deal, you got your game back!

    • Hi Sanders,

I wouldn’t say it better my self. Those two are the same I think so as well. For me, the feeling of faith and love are most powerful gifts we got. Many people will neglect this, but that is because of some other reasons I wouldn’t like to mention here. All the best to those who believe! Thank you for the comment.
