5 Things You’ll Need to Escape From The Rat Race ASAP

Looking at any city during rush hour from a bird’s eye view, it’s quite easy to understand why we call it a rat race.

When I look at the people on the streets, I’m not sure whether I should laugh or cry. People are running around like crazy these days, without even knowing why?

To me, it looks like we are running to survive… Like a rat in a maze.

What is Rat Race

First of All, What is the Rat Race?

Our western civilization system was originally constructed in such a way as to take care of the man. Or at least it is meant to take care of the man. It began with a good intention to give everyone a chance for a decent life.

However, the corporate world and human greed have turned the system into what we call a rat race today.

The concept of the system goes something like this:

  • Age 0 – 7 we enjoy our lives
  • Age 7 – 20 we are preparing for the life (school)
  • Age 20 – 65 rat race begins (9-5)
  • Age 65 – 80+ we “enjoy” the years of our work

Some people like the system, they think it is wonderful, safe, and secure. They get all they need from their corporate bosses and they are happy. I can’t argue with that.

If you are happy to be a part of the system, go for it. Stop reading right now.

However, I think that we are not meant to live that kind of life. To give 45 (!!!) years of our lives to the job you don’t even like is ridiculous! We have one life only and I think we are expected to live free and enjoy the world that we are a part of! We should be in the first place.

And why do you work at your job? Probably to pay off for all things you don’t even need in your life. And of course to provide for your family which is probably the only good reason why you run the race.

Today, man is not in first place anymore. Not even in second place. He is in third place, behind money and machine (read: computer, car, phone, etc.) We slave to those things. I am not trying to say there is no use out of them, of course, there is, however, they should serve to us, no other way around.

I can go in depth about this topic all day. But that is not the reason why I wanted to write this post.

So, if you wish to put yourself in the first place and finally escape from the vicious cycle of the rat race, this post might help you begin.

Escape Button

Now, How to Escape From Rat Race?

I was in the same position for some time, almost ten years. All the time I had this urge in me to fight it, to escape from it. I knew I was not a rat, neither did I belong in a so-called rat race.

Slowly, I started to scratch my head and ask myself the question of how?

How To Escape From Rat Race

For every question, there is an answer!

I got mine, and I will share with you five things you will have to have with you, while climbing over the maze walls, running to your freedom.

Oh, by the way, to answer the question of how I will say this:

“Those who think they can and those who think they can’t are both usually right.” -Confucius

If you can create an attitude that it is going to be easy, you will find it is easy. If you are going to hold a grudge against your boss or your job and carry a negative attitude with you, believe me, you will remain where you are.

It is a mental game. To win in your reality, you will have to earn it in your head first. These five bits of advice can help you to prepare yourself mentally in order to stay focused and strong until you reach your freedom.

One more advice is to relax, stay relaxed, and enjoy the ride! You never know, you might find you will have some fun along the way.

Now, here are some of the “tools” you are going to need to make the escape as smooth as possible.

5 Things You’ll Need to Escape From the Rat Race

I have discovered and made a list of 5 essential things you need with you on your journey out from the rat race.  Neglect to take one of these with you and you will miss an opportunity to win.

Moreover, remember this, you can use these five tools to accomplish anything after in life. Just try and see.

1.) Strong Desire

Desire is the fuel which propels your actions. How far you will go, depends on how strong your desire is. Don’t just wish for it, instead, dream it, want it, burn for it.!

If your desire is strong enough, you will ultimately achieve it!

ADVICE!

Write it down on a piece of paper and keep it with you to remind yourself every single day of what you are fighting for. Read it every day for at least two times. This may sound silly to you right now, but trust me, if nothing it will help you to create an everyday focus on your desire.

2.) Blind Faith

I wrote “blind” for a reason. You are going somewhere you have never been before. So make sure you believe you will get there.

“If you can see it in your mind, you can hold it in your hand.” -Bob Proctor

Here is a small, yet powerful exercise for developing a feeling of faith.

Close your eyes a few times a day, and daydream your escape. Relax and use your imagination to go places, do things you want to do, dream the freedom you desire. See yourself as a free human and not a rat that runs around all day. Because if you are able to see it in your mind first it means you have enough faith in you to do it in your reality.

DO NOT MISS THIS!

Because, when your desire gets weak, your faith will lift you up and push you further.

Because, when your desire gets weak, your faith will lift you up and push you further. Faith will ignite the flames of your desire if they get weak. Faith will give additional strength to your actions. Without faith, you can’t get much in life.

Do not neglect this powerful emotion!

3.) A Goal and a Plan

You are going on a journey, a journey with one destination, your freedom. So make sure you set your direction toward it.

Transform your desire into a goal, and your goal into a plan, and your plan into action.

4.) Persistence of Rocky Balboa

If you watched any of the (I don’t know how many) Rocky movies starring Sylvester Stallone, you can perceive that one great quality in the Rocky character is persistence, and this facilitated his victories.

In celebration of persistence, Napoleon Hill wrote this line in his classic book, Think and Grow Rich:

“There may be no heroic connotation to the word persistence, but the quality is to the character of man what carbon is to steel.”

There will be tough times in your escape from the rat race. No matter how tough it becomes, you will have to persist in your intention!

Because, in the end, persistence pays off!

5.) A Sidekick

Batman and Robin, Bonnie and Clyde, Jordan and Pippen, You and?

Anyone who is close to you can be your sidekick: girlfriend, boyfriend, wife, husband, sister, brother, mother, father, friend.

Take at least one person with you because it is twice as easy to make it happen with help from someone who you have a connection to.

I took my younger brother with me.

Whenever you have difficulty climbing over the maze walls, or you don’t know whether to go left or right, you will have someone besides you to give you a hand.

One hand washes another.

And remember! Two heads are smarter than one.

Five Essentials For Escape

How Long it Takes to Escape From Rat Race?

It all depends on how strong your desire is, how much faith you have in your abilities, how good your goals and plans are, and how much persistent you are!

If you ever find yourself lacking in any of the mentioned, you will have your sidekick to push you forward, or to give you a word of encouragement, a piece of advice, or just a look of faith that you can do it.

So, how long it takes, it practically all depends on you! For some people, it takes decades of struggle. Other people who prepare themselves properly manage to do it in a short time.

One more factor plays a huge role here, and that is your PATIENCE. You will have to know that no one knows how long does it take for some things to happen. If we wait long enough, persevere and work toward our goal, the situation will occur.

However, if you lose your patience, you will lose your goal.

One more time I will give you the same advice. It can be easy and fun if you stay relaxed and enjoy it.

Escape From Rat the Race, Be Your Boss and Work From Home

Sounds good?

Be Free And Work From Home

For me, the idea of working from home and being my own boss was my actual desire. The fact that I will be able to get up from my desk and spend time with my family in the next room was it for me!

I was looking and searching until I found the right thing for me. In the meantime, I had a lot of opportunities, but I had not taken any of them. I knew what I wanted, and I was not going to settle for less.

I found my thing, and I found out a lot of people share my situation which is an excellent thing. I can connect with more people, grow faster, create networks quickly, share ideas, and a lot more.

Affiliate marketing was my thing. It is a job like every other.

However, here are a few reasons how and why it helped me to escape:

  • It is a job I run by my self; I am my BOSS!
  • I can work from home or anywhere I want as long as I have an Internet connection! FREEDOM of movement.
  • The real beauty of things lies in the fact that I can do something that I like and LOVE to do!
  • I earn money by doing something that I LIKE not something that I HAVE to do.
  • I can create MULTIPLE SOURCES OF PASSIVE INCOME!

All I needed to escape from the rat race and become my boss were those five things above, coupled with a laptop and Internet connection.

  1. Hi Ivan,

Nice article. I remember when I first heard about the Rat Race, in Robert Kiyosaki’s books. It was like an eye opener for me and I must confess the staring point for my financial freedom.
    Thanks for reminder and sharing.

  2. Great article and great tips! That’s exactly what I did and never looked back. I agree, all these five essentials are equally important for success. I also like your advice to relax and enjoy the ride because everything comes much easier and quicker when you’re having fun along the way.

    • Hi Blanka,

I am glad you liked the post and that you did exactly what I suggest. I will always put an emphasis on the importance of having fun in the process. To be able to relax while you are undergoing something like an escape from the rat race will help you to speed up your journey and get there much faster. I believe you know a thing or two about it. Thank you for stopping by. All the best.

  3. I agree with you that you need to take someone with you on any journey, especially to somewhere new. What are your thoughts though on finding someone to take you with them?

What I’m getting at is finding a mentor. Someone who has done it before. Having blind faith is pretty hard, but having faith in someone else that has done it before might help you get over that hump and actually pursue your dream outside the 9-5.

Do you have any recommendations on how to find a good mentor?

    Reply
    • Hi Craig,

First of all, I would like to recommend you to get into a program called Six Minutes to Success, by Bob Proctor. He is a great teacher and a mentor. A long time ago he accomplished what you are trying right now. And now, 50 years after he is still teaching how to get better results in life. In the end, it is all up to you and your efforts, remember that. People find mentors expecting mentors to do the work for them. That is a wrong attitude, and I hope you are not having the same. MEntor should be a person who can tell you how to do things but not what to do. You have to find out what to do. One more time, I think Bob Proctor is a great mentor, and if you go for his programs, you won’t be disappointed.

You can learn how to have blind faith. After in life it everything will be easier for you! I have been through the process and my life is only getting better and better.

  4. Hi Ivan,

This is so inspiring – thank you. I completely resonate with this article. I spent 17 years living in London City. I tell you, people over there just live for the weekends. Monday starts, rain kicks in, cars loud beeping and hustling past people to get to a job you absolutely HATE beyond a nightmare!! NO exaggeration either.

I have spent hours on buses and trains to arrive at a job soaked with sweat and already tired. Then do a 12 hour split shift and do the journey home again – and for what – less than $300 a week! KEEP IT!!

My last job was pretty much like all the rest. Super-Man for my bosses just to be treated like dirt – REAL DIRT!

I flippped – I completely flipped out on my last boss. All those years of loyal and heart invested work and STILL I was treated like some idiot fresh in the door. I can’t say here the language I used, it would not be approvable as a comment.

That was years ago. To this day, even if you put a gun to my head, I would never work for another human being again – I am not kidding. Waste of precious life. Waste…

I work on my site every waking minute of my day until my mind just can’t take it anymore. I am not saying that it is a must to do it this way but it sure does speed up the money earning side of things.

Strong desire will lead to quick results – trust me on this.

I am not lucky enough to have my own side kick. No one believes, STILL, I can do this === EVEN THOUGH IAM MAKING MONEY!! Oh, the doubting Thomas’s, they would rip the heart of me for the words they say.

Do not listen. They will only take your dreams from you. YOU just focus on earning 10K a month. If you think that is not possible, then its not your fault, the money men of the world have you convinced you can’t do it or you have to be special or gifted.

THIS IS NOT TRUE! Listen to the words of this article and take its advice. You will be happy you did.

Along this path you see glimmerings telling you that you can escape from the rat race. Just believe in yourself like the deep roots of a tree in a storm and you will see you life dawning into financial liberation – I kid you NOT!

Thanks Ivan, I found your article honest, truthful and liberating as well.

    Sincerely,

    Philip.

    • Hi Philip,

First of all, thank you for such a wonderful comment! It shows that everything is possible if you believe. All obstacles in life are only obstacles if you think you can go over them, under, or around them. If you keep the belief in you, you will eventually come to the finish line as a winner, and all obstacles will be behind you.

I am glad to read your story. It fills me with happiness to learn how one managed to fight for himself, and go for the life he believes in! I agree with you that money man will make you think it is not possible to do it on your own. Oooh, the stories they try to sell you to keep you under their boot. Instead, they should be happy for you, give a pat on the back, advice or two, and stuff like that. I don’t know what it is, and I don’t want to know, what happens to a man who is purely driven by desire money. The message to all of you reading, MONEY IS IMPORTANT, BUT MONEY IS ONLY A SERVANT! YOU SHOULD LOVE PEOPLE AND USE THE MONEY!

Philip, I feel the energy from your comment. I can say you are a hard worker, diligent in your work, and honest and respectable man, confident and radiant. I am glad you have come here and left an inspiring comment for all who will read it. And to you, I wish you fulfill all of your dreams and hopes, leave the grudge of the former bosses behind you, and focus only on wonderful things that will come to you.

      All the best,
      Ivan

  5. Actually, your article is more interesting regarding rate race. While I reading this post, I remind the tom and jerry cartoon because most of the time they are racing after chasing. This great article, while I reading this, without stopping I read it, more informative and understandable. I also try to apply things you suggest. Thanks for your suggestion and provide information to open our eyes. thanks

  7. Thanks for a really interesting article, I am desperate to escape from the rat race and your post has pushed me to keep going! What do you think was the hardest part for you in getting started in affiliate marketing?

    • Hi Amy,

Happy to give you a push forward. For me, the hardest part was to find a teacher, mentor, course, training, program or whatever or whoever who can teach me. I like to think I am a fast learner, and when I have someone with much more experience to show me the way it becomes natural. Surfing on my own and finding bits and pieces was frustration. However, it took me in the direction of Wealthy Affiliate. It is an example of how we must go through thought times to receive the reward.

      Keep on going forward!

Considering I’ve been reading your previous posts, I gotta say – I’m not surprised.
Escaping the rate race is the ultimate dream.
It doesn’t take that much one a person makes a decision.
Thanks for the inspiring words, they totally made my day!

  9. Hi Ivan, I could have written this myself!! Love your ideas here. I think that whilst it might be a bit scary, with technology at our fingertips ANYONE can escape the rat race. Sometimes it isn’t always obvious how that can happen, but with some research, and with posts like these that can point people in the right direction, there are legitimate ways that people can take charge of their own lives and make a start. It’s all about starting. You have to start somewhere and give it a try.
The other great thing about starting an online career, such as affiliate marketing, is that you don’t have to give up your day job to do it. You can learn while you work, and gradually build up your business until you’re ready to either reduce your day job or leave the rat race altogether. Cheers

    • Hi Melissa,

Amazing comment, thank you! It is my purpose with this website to point people in the right direction, show them a way to things they want in life without too much philosophy. In simplest words as possible so that we all can understand. I believe in clean communication. In my own experience, whenever I was searching for some points and directions I found a lot of confusing material. Too many people talk about the same topic but in too complicated or comprehensive way. Anyway, I am glad you like my post.

We are not aware how many advantages we have today over people who were trying before us. My hats of to man and woman back in the last century who were determined to escape the rat race. There were not too many of them, simply because the information was not as able as they are today. However, one of the benefits of the internet era in which we live in is the easy access to them.

Affiliate marketing is one of the best ways to get started for many reasons. My personal favorite is I can work on something I like to do, which is spreading the knowledge and sitting by the computer. Freedom and money are one of the benefits as well.

Once again to everyone who is reading this post: If I can do it, you can do it even better than me!

      All the best,
      Ivan

  10. Hello Ivan.
Love the article. And it’s definitely a timely reminder.
I’ve had an uneasy feeling about the rate race for over a decade. Only the last couple of years have I started to take action. But, as you’ve pointed out. It’s hard. I’ve slumped back in. And then tried coming out, and gone back in etc.
Once again i’m starting to try and get out…hopefully this time I can last the distance. It’s the financial pressures (especially as you get older) that get to me. Where’s the next pay going to come from, will I be able to put food on the table etc. But I suppose this is the natural way forward for this type of life-style.
    Thank you for the tips.

    • Hi Zulfaqar,

Thank you for commenting. I have tested one theory and convinced my self in practice that it works. It just goes like this: See It, Believe It, Achieve It. My mistake in the past was, and I assume you are doing the same, that I always looked at my results in the present moment. I saw what is happening around me at the moment and I let that affect me. I wished for a new situation in my heart, but in my mind, I didn’t have a picture of it. I was working with the image that I created by thinking about my past and present. It led me downhill whenever I tried to go uphill. We are blessed with a mental faculty of imagination. We can use it to create anything we want in life. You can close your eyes, relax, and imagine a better scenario for your self. You can see yourself in your imagination as a winner, a free person. The problem is, people stop use the imagination at some point in life. And like a muscle, imagination if not used often, will get weak. When you can see it in your imagination, the next step is to feel it. The feelings are what moves us. Most of the people will deny their senses. That is why most of the people will never get desired results in life. We have to have faith in our heart in the mental image from our mind. Only then the action we take will produce the results we want. And how do you induce a feeling of faith, or love, or enthusiasm? By repetition. Repetition of positive thoughts about a situation. See it in your mind every day, and allow yourself to feel it as well.
      All the best,
      Ivan

I am one of those people in the rat race and I am working to get myself out of it because I hate it.
I read personal development and money books to fuel my mind with motivation.
I promised myself I will not be in the rat race in the next two years time.
So your tips are what I am definitely using right now.
I am an an athlete as well and have achieved great results in my sports where I represented my country and I used exactly these principles to succeed.
So I am using the same to escape the rat race.

    • Hi Thabo,

So, first of all, thank you for your comment.

I am an athlete as well. I am more of an amateur. However, the mindset is the same. I know how to push my self when though gets going to push through it. Those five essential things are in DNA of an athlete. That is the reason why I do not doubt you. I know you possess the key ingredient, and that is the right mindset.

When a person manages to win in own mind over a particular situation, the person then has to work and wait for the result to happen. And it is going to happen according to the scenario from their mind.

I wish you all the best on your journey.

  12. Man, you’re so right. 45 years is a long time spent doing something that gets you only one place- retirement. Then, you’re too old to enjoy not having the 9-5. I think it’s funny that my wife and I had this same conversation yesterday. I don’t want to wait until I’m too old to be able to enjoy life. It’s about making great moments, and I don’t feel I can do that stuck behind the same desk for 45 years. Thanks for the post.

    • Hi Chris,

The life is only one and we have to live it free as God intended us to live. I don’t like to compare today’s system with, however, I must say it resembles a slavery that was happening through the history of the world. To be able to be with your children 24/7 is priceless. To raise them the way you want and not the way school and the street will do instead of you.

There are ways how to escape the rat race. I even wrote a post from my own experience: https://yourpersonaldevelopment.org/become-financially-free-in-3-5-years

People don’t believe in something if they do do it by themselves. That is the core problem in today’s world. Everyone would like to be free from work, but rare one will understand what it really takes to make it happen. In this post, I wrote exactly what is needed. If you will equip yourself with those five essential things I guarantee you will escape from the rat race and you will enjoy the rest of your life.

Thank you for your comment. All the best.
