A couple of years ago, I had a question on my mind that haunted me every day for a long time. Every morning when I woke up, and every evening just before I went to bed, I was asking myself, “How do I become free?” Not just financially, but in the real sense of the word.

The following sentence is the best definition of financial freedom.

To become financially free, you have to earn an income which exceeds your expenses such that you can live without money worries.

In this post, I will give you three ways or steps that you can take to become financially free in 5 years or even less.

Before we begin, I would like to share a definition of money from the book You Were Born Rich, by Bob Proctor.

Money is Important. Money is a servant. You should love people and use money, not the other way around.

How to Become Financially Free in 5 Years

I highly recommend this book to everyone who is interested in learning how to use the money for a higher purpose other than just spending it. Bob Proctor did a great job with this book to help us understand what money is, how to use it and not be used by it, how to attract it in our life, and much more.

Now, let’s get the business going.

3 Ways to Become Financially Free

Way 1. People at Work

It means you trade your time for someone’s money, which is probably what you do right now, in addition to 99% of our population.

This is also called an active income.

Many people hate their job. Some people are ashamed of what they do for a living. Let me tell you, there is no shame in a 9-5 if you provide an honest service to people. It must be taken with pride, not guilt.

3 Ways To Become Financially Free

I was waiting tables in restaurants, bars, and hotels for eight years. Every single day I did it with pride. I was not ashamed to make a cup of coffee and take it to a person with a smile on my face. Sure, there were tips and wages, but my satisfaction with my service was a smile given back.

If you work hard and more than eight hours per day you can become financially free. Many people live a decent life from trading time for money, providing to their families more than they need.

Moreover, if you are well paid you can save up a respectable amount of money during 10-20 years. So you can try to boost your financial freedom by following the second way.

Way 2. Money at Work

Employ money to get more money. Or in other words, let your money work for you.

Here are few examples of money investment:

  • your own business
  • savings for return interest rate
  • stocks, bonds, and shares
  • real estate investment

Invest for Financial Freedom

If you have some expertise, like waiting tables for example, and you managed to save up some money for your own venture, or you find an investor or get a loan, you can turn your knowledge into a profit. Depending on the field of your expertise, amount of money you have, and work you are capable of performing you can become financially free in 3-5 years.

Next, you can try to invest some money into stock market. No major expertise is needed if you wish to take a swing at stocks. You can try some FREE apps such as eToro. You can trade for virtual money after you sign in. This means you can play for as long as you wish, or until you get enough confidence in your trading skills to start a real money venture.

Stock Investment

Another example is, you can open a savings account in gold. Or, roll over your existing savings plan into gold. This means you will buy and hold physical gold. This kind of money investment is wise in many aspects. First of all, gold is not like a flat paper currency, which means it is more stable than money. So in the event of a market crash like the recent one from 2008, your money would be safe because it is converted into a gold. Moreover, there are less and less gold resources left in the world which means, the price of the gold is rapidly climbing. Unlike paper money, a gold cannot be produced at will. In other words, if you invest in gold your earnings from the investment will increase over time.

You can invest your savings in real estate. Let’s say you buy an apartment and rent it for a bit higher price to earn a return interest.

Or, you can buy a house, refurbish the house, and sell it for a higher price. You can keep repeating this procedure as long as you want.

All of these would eventually transform themselves into a form of a passive income.

However, after much research I found a third and a much smarter way to become financially free in 3-5 years!

Way 3. Multiple Sources of Income

What does this mean?

Way 1 + Way 2 = Multiple Sources of Income

Basically, you can earn money from your passive income while being busy with, and be earning from your active income. Your passive income allows you to earn even when you sleep!

Almost everyone who has created a state of financial freedom in their life was using a principle of MSI. They have an active income coming to them from their major occupation. Plus, they managed to add to that a few passive incomes from multiple sources.

Multiple Sources of Income

The Best Way to Become Financially Free

Now, I am going to give you my own example of how I managed to create multiple sources of income in my life. Therefore, I can live without money worry, or simply, financially free.

I earn a passive income from affiliate marketing. I run this website, I write posts about topics I like to discuss with people, and ultimately I earn a passive income from my writing. It takes the minimum to no effort to maintain it because it is a simple thing to do. Plus, I am turning my hobby into a passive income.

Furthermore, I created a virtual portfolio on the stock market. Once I saw it is easy and anyone can do it, I invested a small amount of my real money to replace my virtual assets. I don’t have to do much to maintain it. All I have to do is to log on once per day to check if everything is stable and to see how much I have earned that day.

My third source of income is my part-time job at a local warehouse. From this job, I earn enough to cover my living expenses (rent, food, clothes, utilities). Everything else I earn from the two passive incomes I use for further investment to create more streams.

Keep reading for more!

So, to say a word or two about my favorite passive income, affiliate marketing.

Probably you have heard about the hype it is making. For the last 10-15 years, online marketing is a fastest-growing field of work. It is snowballing so big. I will take the liberty of saying online marketing is the business of the future!

More and more people are turning to online or affiliate marketing for their piece of the pie. And, I must say it is a gigantic pie!

A giant like Google, which by the way plays a significant role in online marketing, is spinning $90 billion per year!!!

The Best Way to Become Financially Free

Google earns a significant portion of its revenue from advertisement. As well as Facebook and YouTube.

All three online giants are an essential part of the machinery called online or affiliate marketing. Moreover, they are necessary to use if you want to take your piece of the pie they bake.

Just a small crumb, a tiny piece is enough for you to become financially free.

And the best thing is you can start for free! No initial investments are needed except your time, laptop, and good internet connection.

You Can Become Financially Free in 3-5 Years

You see, doing something such as affiliate marketing will give you a great opportunity to create multiple sources of income in a short period of 3-5 years.

One website, after it is finished, up and running, can earn you a passive income. By creating second, and the third one, you can create more of the same.

The beauty lies in the fact that you can work on something you actually like and enjoy.

The basic concept of affiliate marketing is to connect the customer with a merchant. You work inside the niche. The niche would be your field of interest, something you can write about. For example, a personal development niche is my passion, so why not earn a passive income while helping others to become better.

Next, you will have to build your own website (your own place of business), create some content and attract few visitors to your site. If you provide a helpful information to your visitors, maybe they will decide to contribute your efforts by clicking through your links and buying something from the merchant whose products you promote.

In the end, it is a win-win situation for all three parties.

Become Free in 3-5 Years

However, it is a job like every other!

So, don’t get fooled thinking something like you can become rich quickly and f*** off everything.

If you can devote 3-5 years of hard work and countless hours by the computer you can become financially free.

Why 3-5 years?

Well, 5 years is usually the period that takes for every new business to become established. In the first year, you will only get started. As the years go by you will learn and grow. By the end of the fifth year, every successful business should be established firmly.

It is not a rule! However, it is a fact.

Maybe you will explode straight away, or maybe not. You will never know if you never try.

Be Free Means Do What You Love

Confucius, a great Chinese teacher, and philosopher once said:

“Chose a job you love, and you will never work a day in your life.”

When you add to it financial freedom you will experience the true meaning of the word free.

I bet you do have some interest in your life, a hobby of some kind, maybe a dream you have given up because you had to go to school, finish college, get a job, and work your ass off for someone else’s profit.

Your hobby can be turned into a business. And, a way to go is affiliate marketing.

To your success!

If you ever need a hand or have any questions, feel free to leave them below and I will be more than happy to help you out.

      Hi Jessica,

The life should be a free and beautiful adventure. By creating multiple sources of income you can become financially free in a short period of 3-5 years. It is worth to make a sacrifice in order to live the rest of the life as a free individual.

Thanks for sharing this very intriguing information. Your pictures are making it even more interesting. Are you of the opinion that one need to create multiple websites to earn a sustainable income form it, or would it be better to constantly add content to one website and thereby increase it in size over a period of time.

    • Reply

      Hi CobusvdM.

I am of the opinion that you can constantly add content on one website thus become an authority in your niche and generate a nice income from it. The point is multiple sources of income, so if you are doing your website, plus working actively on a job, you have an MSI, active and passive. Or, you can create multiple websites to create your MSI, and quit your active job. It is all about personal wishes.

      All the best,

Ivan I love your content. It is very clear and layed out well. Thanx for highlighting that an online business can get you financial free but you first have to put great amounts of work. I read a lot of financial books and thus have been and still am a student of producing passive income. Thanx for the great article

Becoming finacially free is just about everyone’s dream, the problem is most people don’t know how to do it. Learning online marketing is a great way to become finacially free, and personally free if you can do it with a subject you love. Good post

I do believe you are right that online marketing is the wave of the future. Pretty soon, we will be purchasing a good portion of what we need from the Internet. I know that I already do that. So it makes sense to capitalize on this. I am curious why you mention 3 to 5 years. Is this how long it takes to establish your online business/market, to be seen and to start to receive an income?

      Hi Matts Mom,

3-5 years is a period that usually takes for a new business to get started, learn and grow, and to become established. It is a fact. However, it is not a law. Some business explodes straight away, it takes them year or two to go through the process. The point is, success in business doesn’t come overnight, and it takes time.

Ivan i want that passive income!!!! lol. yes indeed and of course the affiliate marketing is part of that. I think you hit the nail on the head in your article without going too much in depth which is good. I certainly believe you must do what you love as well. I am now doing the things you mentioned so let’s see what happens in the next 3-5 years!!

    Hey Ivan,

Well said about you should love people and not money. I think a lot of people don’t really live by that, though. Meaning, I have seen people turn on each other just for money. I guess the old adage you can’t buy happiness is true though. But, people will always try!

I remember years ago I was in a niche that makes a decent amount of money. However, I could care less about the niche. Once, it stopped making money I completely lost interest in it, though.

Sorry for rambling. But, it all starts with goals. You might have a 9-5 job when you start your business, but you should be constantly working on your side income. There is no shame in having a business and a 9-5 job, too. A lot of people do it and if stuff ever goes south in your business you have something to fall back on. Believe me, I am speaking from experience on this!

I have been in affiliate marketing for 10 years now. I love it. It’s probably the coolest job you will ever do! Work on niches you actually like and make money at it. What’s not to love about that? Sure, it does take awhile before you start making really decent income though.

Do you have any tips for finding what your passion is though? It’s important to pick a niche that you won’t lose interest in a year or so, though.

      Hi Garen,

Well, money can lead to happiness, it cannot buy it for sure.

I believe that if a person doesn’t like his 9-5 job and has an opportunity to make a primary income out of his side business, he or she should GO for it 100%, no retreat, no plan B to fall back on it, no safety net, just burn the bridges and never look back. In the end, there is truth it another one from Confucius: “Those who think they can, and those who think they can’t, are both usually right.”

I am preparing a post about how to turn your passion into a business. Soon you will find it on my blog, so keep coming back 🙂

      All the best,

My dad always said, you only get money by working for a boss. With your post I can prove him wrong.
    Thanks a lot!

    Hi Ivan,

Great post! Yes I have tried many of the opportunities you mention and some have paid off others haven’t. Of course we all start off working for a boss although more young people these days seem to have their own online businesses and are doing really well.

I am getting into affiliate marketing now and I agree with you, 3 to 5 years should be about right. I am in 18 months and money starting to slowly flow in.

    Thanks again,

Affiliate marketing is great. It can give you another source of income and your efforts will be combined over time. However, I wouldn’t call it freedom necessarily. I think that you still have to rely on the internet being popular in the future. I see it as a viable option in the near future, but life may drastically change when artificial intelligence is implemented.

      Hi Melinda.

Thank you for the comment. Affiliate marketing is here as a suggestion to all who can see the value of it. Wich one would you recommend as well?

I think we live in the age of huge revolution which we are not yet aware of. The Internet is slowly taking over every aspect of life. So having your business relying strictly on your effort online can produce freedom, financial as well as complete.

Hi Ivan! Bob Proctor is such a HUGE influence in my life. I’m glad you were able to connect with him and learn about the ways to create wealth and then share with others how to do the same.

I absolutely agree about multiple sources of income. I love affiliate marketing because it can be one source of income, or you can turn it into multiple sources of income. You can do it full time, or on the side of whatever you’re already doing. It’s *almost* perfect.

How long have you been an affiliate marketer? What are your favorite and least favorite things about it?

      Hi Christina,

      Thank you for your comment.

I am in affiliate marketing for a year. I found it interesting in all aspects of it. There is no least favorite thing about it from my perspective. I am a hard worker, and I like the challenge. Affiliate marketing is full of both. So everything about it is my favorite. I like to write, and I like to help, I like to sell, I like to learn, I like to be by the computer, I like to communicate with like-minded people. All in all, affiliate marketing is fun and enjoyable, and I recommend it as a full-time job to anyone who feels the same way about it as I do!

What do you think about it? How long are you in the business?

What a great post! I left my 9-5 ( or 11-7 I should say) about 2 years ago to chase my passion for art. It has definitely been an emotional roller coaster. I stumbled across affiliate marketing about a year ago and just started to learn how to do it a few months ago. I have to admit that it has certainly been challenging but fun!

Affiliate marketing isn’t true freedom. You still have to run it and maintain it, so you must have internet and a computer. However, it does free up a bit of your time. It is one way to have a bit more money in your pocket.

      Hi Melinda,

It all depends on the person. For me, it is because I can de something that I love and want, rather than something that I MUST.

Therefore, I am feeling free even if I sit by the computer for 9-8-10 hours. After I get up from my desk, I am free, energized and happy. The money part is just a bonus from work.

Don’t get offended, but I believe that people from my generation can value this information a little bit more.

Yes, I agree. The concept of working for yourself is always changing and shifting, and new methods are coming up more and more frequently as more and more people are getting involved. For me, it is important to try and test every method that I hear about. Because if someone else did it using the exact method, it means I or you can do it as well.

What if I tell you now that your life can be a vacation? It is not a fairy tale or make-believe story. I just think if we can switch our perspective on the money we would have much more freedom in our lives to go on vacation with family and friends whenever we want. 🙂 Thank you for the comment.

Thanks for the great content Ivan! I’m aiming to achieve financial freedom in the time frame of few years. Well, it takes as long as it takes, but if I can do less work and travel more I will be happy. Currently I’m working a demanding full time day job as an civil engineer and working the nights and weekends on building my first affiliate marketing site. Wish me luck!

I have made some small stock investments in the past but I have a mortgage to pay now, so I’m basically investing in real estate. The terminology you introduced here was great by the way!

I love your attitude! How you smile and love your job no matter what it was, even if it was waiting at restaurants or hotels. Instead of being grumpy about having to serve others, you are encouraging everyone to love their job no matter what it is. The world needs more people like you to make it a better place!
And thank you for the tips on affiliate marketing! I’m also blogging right now, and your advice that it takes 3 to 5 years to take off is inspiring and encouraging, motivates me to keep at it even though I don’t see the results yet.
